It’s Time to Pass the PRO Act!

It’s Time to Pass the PRO Act!

Contact Your Senators Today!

Recently, USW organizers were on the ground in South Carolina, talking to workers at Giti Tire about joining our union. Within hours, the company held mandatory meetings with the workers at the plant and sent a letter to their homes discouraging them from organizing. We know that if labor reform like the PRO Act doesn’t happen, Giti will continue to intimidate its workers and likely retaliate or fire those who fight to get the union in.

The purposes of the Protecting the Right to Organize (PRO) Act are simple: to ensure workers can push for the changes we want to see at our jobs without fear of retaliation, and to strengthen workers’ rights to form a union and negotiate for those changes if we so choose.

The PRO Act ensures that employers cannot:

  • Fire and permanently replace workers who are on strike.
  • Lock out, suspend or withhold work from employees to stop them from striking.
  • Tell employees that they are independent contractors when they are actually employees.
  • Force employees to attend anti-union messaging meetings.
  • Change work conditions, pay, or benefits while negotiating a union contract.
  • Force employees to waive their right to collective and class legal action.
  • Prohibit employees from using work computers for collective action.

Currently, there are no penalties for employers like Giti who illegally retaliate against or fire workers for collective action. The bill is necessary because our woefully outdated labor laws are no longer effective as a means for working people to have our voices heard.

On the occasion of the 27th anniversary of the demise of President Kim Il Sung

Notice: this article was posted late, as this was intended to be posted on July 6th, nevertheless, we feel it is important to post.

TOAll National and International Trade Unions Organizations

For the presentthe Korean working class and working people and progressive mankind of the world have been looking back the immortal and glorious revolutionary life of the President Kim Il Sung in the most humble reverencedevoting himself to happiness of the people and realization of independent cause of mankindon the occasion of the 27th anniversary of his demise (July 8, 1994).

The greatest one of all his exploits is to blaze a new trail for the Korean revolution by the extraordinary ideological theory and to thoroughly embody it in the whole course of the revolution and construction.

The founding of the immortal Juche idea was a historic event of great significanced in the Korean people's struggle for independence.

The Juche idea was founded by President Kim Il Sung in Juche 19(1930) when he was in his teens.

After occupying Korea, the Japanese imperialists had suppressed anti-Japanese-struggle,s, arresting, imprionsing and killing patriots at random to stamp down on the Korean people's hope for national independence. At that time, the Korean people's resistance and mass struggle grew stronger, but they came to failure as they were not guided under the proper line.

From the first days of his revolutionary struggle, the President keenly realized the necessity for a new guiding idea to save the destiny of the nation and lead the national liberation struggle to victory, and groped for a new path.

On this basis, he held a meeting of leading personnel of the Young Communist League and the Anti-Imperialist Youth League in Kalun from June 30 to July 2, 1930 and made a historic report "The Path of the Korean Revolution" at the meeting. In the report, he clarified the steadfast stand that the Korean people are responsible for the Korean revolution and the Korean revolution should be carried out by themselves in keeping with the specific conditions of their country.

His report was a great declaration on the founding of the Juche idea that the popular masses are masters of the revolution and construction and they are also the motive force of the revolution and construction.

On the basis of the revolutionary principles of the Juche idea, the President defined in a scientific way the character, basic tasks, motive power and target of struggle of the Korean revolution and set forth the Juche-oriented line and strategic and tactical policies.

Under the banner of the Juche idea founded by the President, the Korean people achieved the historic cause of national liberation on August 15, 1945 and have dynamically advanced the revolution and construction, recording miraculous victories in the DPRK's history of more than 70 years.

The President Kim Il Sung, indeed, the greatest leader the Korean people, the founder of the socialist Korea had ever had in the long history of the nation, and was an ever-victorious iron-willed military commander gifted with outstanding military wisdom.

The people-loving history of the President who had devoted his tireless efforts for happiness of the people, in spite of his great age of eighty, today, goes on unchangingly on this land thanks to the respected Comrade Kim Jong Un.

Today, committees for remembering President Kim Il Sung were organized and various political and cultural events including remembrance meetings, film shows, photo exhibitions, seminars and lectures are being held in different countries all over the world. Also his immortal classical works and information concerned with his achievements are being carried in mass media.

Greeting this unforgettable July, the Korean working class and people are full of firm confidence and determination that the President Kim Il Sung is always with the Korean people and progressive mankind of the world and a powerful socialist nation will be built in this land without failure by turning all out in the struggle for implementing of resolutions of the 8th Congresses of Workers' Party of Korea and General Federation of Trade Unions of Korea (GFTUK), thanks to the sagacious guidance of Kim Jong Un, chairman of the State Affairs Commission of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea(DPRK).

For the new employers’ crime in Bangladesh

PAME denounces the new mass murder of workers in Bangladesh, where dozens of workers were tragically killed in a fire that broke out on Thursday, July 8, at the Hashem Food and Beverage food factory in the city of Rupgani, near the capital Dhaka. In another sweatshop, one of the countless ones maintained by the multinationals in the specific country, which every year count dead workers in similar employers’ crimes.

This situation also bears the signature of the EU and the penetration of European business groups with preference agreements they have signed over the years. The local government has recently received praise from the EU as a successful example of development.

In the so-called free industrial export zones, where the "growth miracle" is built and praised by European Union clothing chains and business groups reigns the inhuman hard work for crumbs, dismissals, child labor, persecution of trade unionists and miserable working conditions without health and safety measures that result in hundreds of dead. PAME expresses its condolences to the families of the victims, to the workers and to the trade unions of Bangladesh.

ILWU International 2021 Convention June 14-18 Resolution to Send Syringes to Cuba and End the Embargo

Resolution introduced by Local 10 ILWU and passed at the 2021 convention.

GHPartners.org/Syringes4Cuba Global Health Partners is a 501c3 charity with a commerce license to send medical supplies to Cuba

Whereas: Four years ago on June 16, 2017, less than six months into his first term in office, the former president declared in a Miami speech that the “Obama Cuba deal” was dead, and

Whereas: Subsequently 243 punitive executive orders were issued intensifying hardship for the working people during the pandemic, and

Whereas: In 2016 the last year of the Obama – Biden administration the resolution against the blockade [at the UN General Assembly] passed 191 to 0 as the U.S. for the first time abstained instead of voting against the resolution, and

Whereas: Except for campaign talk the Biden administration has not done anything to undo the hardships of the embargo on the Cuban people. This has resulted in Cuba with a shortage of 20 million syringes needed to vaccinate its 11 million residents with its Cuban developed vaccine against COVID-19, and

Whereas: Over the past year alone, Cuba has sent 3,700 health workers, in 52 international medical brigades, to 39 countries overwhelmed by the pandemic. Cuba’s international medical brigades have treated patients and saved lives for the past 15 years in 53 countries confronting natural disasters and serious epidemics, such as the Ebola crisis in West Africa, and

Whereas: Cuba has developed five internationally recognized candidate COVID-19 vaccines, with two in Phase III clinical trials as of April 2021. Cuba has 11.3 million people but plans to produce 100 million doses of vaccine, to meet its commitment to sharing its low-cost vaccines with poor countries in the developing world. and

Whereas: Since May 5, 2020, twenty-four municipal, county, and labor bodies have passed resolutions calling for medical and scientific collaboration with Cuba and ending the sanctions, including multiple entities in California and Washington State, and

Whereas: Even Cuban Americans in Miami have demonstrated with a bike and car caravans on the last Sunday of every month for the past year calling for an end to the blockade and instead build bridges of love, now joined in other cities, and

Whereas: the ILWU has enjoyed an international relationship with the Cuban Workers Federation (CTC), and in 1947, participated in organizing the International Sugar Workers Committee,

Therefore be it Resolved that this Convention calls on the Biden administration to vote FOR this Resolution to end the U.S. unilateral extraterritorial embargo of Cuba and act swiftly to remove Cuba from the spurious US list of state sponsors of terrorism, reset Cuba regulations to January 1, 2017, and continue the respectful discussion to fully normalize US-Cuba relations, and

Further be it Resolved, that the ILWU donate $10,000 to GlobalHealth Partners to purchase Syringes4Cuba, and

Further be it Resolved, that this Resolution be distributed to Congressional delegations, the news media, and all labor organizations urging them to do the same.
