CPI(M) condemns the Delhi Police's action which detained peaceful protesters

CPI(M) condemns the Delhi Police's action which detained peaceful protesters who had assembled against instigation of slogans propagating communal hatred and genocide by BJP leaders. SFI Comrades participated in the protest and were detained.

SFI Delhi Press Statement:

SFI Delhi, along with concerned citizens gathered for a protest today, August 10th, 2021 at 4pm at Jantar Mantar against the instigation of slogans propagating communal hatred and genocide by BJP leaders.

Former BJP Spokesperson and Supreme court lawyer Ashwini Upadhyay called for a rally under the Bharat Jodo movement demanding a uniform civil code and scrapping of 'colonial-era laws' at Jantar Mantar on Sunday, 8th August 2021. He had filed a PIL in the SC last month against the Indian Penal Code, seeking a judicial panel or a body of experts to draft a 'comprehensive' and 'stringent' penal code for ensuring rule of law and equality. The protest became a platform to stir communal frenzy in the capital of the country, right under the nose of Delhi Police.

Today's gathering was aimed resisting the communal polarization with a message of peace and secularism.

However, the Delhi Police detained the activists with the aim of stopping the public meet to take place. Such high-handed attitude of the Police shows intolerance to citizens who gathering in protecion of the constitutional valies of brotherhood and harmony. It also exposes again the Central government for its agenda of allowing the captal to burn in communal tensions, while clamping down of peace gatherings promoting unity amongst Hindus and Muslims.

'As the many video evidences show, the protesting mob chanted anti-muslim slogans, blatantly calling for a genocide. Children as young as 10 years had joined the protest along with their parents holding posters calling for annihilation of Islam. They shouted "Jab mulle kaate jayenge, Ram Ram Chillayenge" and haggled a news reporter of 'National Dastak', Anmol Pritam, forcing him to chant "Jai Shri Ram". Upon refusing to do so he was called a "jihadi" by the crowd. It is absolutely detestable that communalist agents were allowed to broadcast such venom and incite people, in the heart of Delhi, at Jantar Mantar with full impunity.', said Sumit Kataria, SFI Delhi President.

"It is blood curdling to see the mute complicity of the Delhi police that acts with much vehemence against student protestors. The police force that brutally clamps down upon students and the general public who take to the streets in defence of the constitution failed to curb the Sangh's terrorist activities. This is a deliberate attempt by the BJP, RSS and other sangh outfits to advance their agendas for a communal hatred and divide.', said Anil, a student of AUD and SFI Delhi State Committee member.

SFI strongly condemns the hypocrite character of the Delhi Police, wherein on the one hand gatherings by BJP and RSS organisations to fuel genocidal and communal sentiments are permitted, and on the other, citizen's protest calling for peace and harmony are attacked.
