After hundreds of nurses stormed Capitol Hill yesterday, the House Ways and Means Committee — which must approve Medicare for All before it heads to the floor for a vote — has agreed to hold historic hearings on this bill.
This is INCREDIBLE news. And in just a moment, we’re going to recap these last two days and chart our next steps forward. But first, we need you to take immediate action and capitalize on this momentum by signing our petition and demanding that Congress support Medicare for All.
Our D.C. trip started on Monday when hundreds of nurses and allies held a massive Medicare for All rally outside of the PhRMA headquarters — one of the biggest and most crooked Big Pharma lobbying groups in the country.
Then, on Tuesday, we traveled to the halls of Congress to meet with our legislators face to face. Our 300 nurses visited the offices of Reps. Richard Neal and Nancy Pelosi, and asked them to listen to the 70% of Americans and 85% of Democrats who support Medicare for All.
Immediately afterwards, the House Rules Committee held a hearing on Medicare for All. Our close friend and ally, Ady Barkan — who is dying of ALS — showed tremendous courage by testifying on behalf of our movement.
And just a few hours later, we received word that our grassroots power helped push Rep. Neal — Chairman of the Ways and Means Committee — to hold a hearing.
This could be a critical turning point in our movement, Joseph. H.R. 1384 — the Medicare for All Act of 2019 — has more than 100 cosponsors in the House. And we just got another official hearing on the bill as a direct result of our activism. The next step is to take advantage of this momentum, and push Congress even harder to support Medicare for All.
