WFTU in Solidarity with NEHAWU strike at the Durban University of Technology

23 Feb 2018

The militant 92 million member international trade union movement, the World Federation of Trade Unions expresses its internationalist class solidarity with the striking workers of the Durban University of Technology who are members of our affiliate NEHAWU in South Africa. Workers’ central demands are wage increase and housing allowance to enable them to access better housing for their families.
WFTU salutes the militancy and resilience displayed by the striking workers who have been on strike for 30 days, and have successfully negated intimidations by the employer.
We denounce in the strongest term the irresponsibility of the employer for disregarding legitimate demands of workers, and have allowed services and academic calendar of the university to be compromised. This behaviour is symbiotic of the conduct and behaviour of employers in a social system that has at the centre of its existence, profit maximisation.
We stand with the striking workers and members of our Affiliate NEHAWU because only militant class struggles will create conditions of a new social order.
“WORKERS OF THE WORLD UNITE! YOU HAVE NOTHING TO LOSE EXECEPT YOUR CHAINS”
